If you want to keep your countertops clean and pristine, then you’ll be sure to follow these tips. Countertop maintenance isn’t difficult, and it doesn’t take that long. The hardest part is remembering what you should do and when you should do it. But Rock Tops Fabrication has come to save the day and keep you on track and help you avoid mistakes that contribute to damaging your beautiful countertops. Here are a few countertop maintenance tips that any homeowner will find useful.
Choosing a Stone That Doesn’t Work With Your Lifestyle
What do we mean by this, you may wonder. If your home has a lot of traffic and tends to stay busy, marble is not the best option. Marble is a more delicate stone that etches with ease. If you’re someone who will forget to seal your countertop (even if you only have to do it annually), quartz may be the best option for you. It’s a nonporous material that you don’t have to seal. Granite is ideal if you’re looking for a durable and beautiful material, and you’ll remember to seal it annually.
Are you a person who aligns with a greener lifestyle? Icestone and Vetrazzo are recyclable materials. The point is that there is a natural or engineered stone for everyone. Ensure that you choose the right one.
Not Resealing Your Countertops
The countertops that we install will already come pre-sealed. But a year later and every year after that, you have to remember to seal them. Once again, choose quartz as your countertop if you know you’ll forget. Another alternative is to pick a granite countertop that comes in a darker color. Typically, you’ll only have to seal these types of countertop every three years.
Cleaning Your Countertop Incorrectly
We advise you against using highly-acidic cleaning agents on your countertop. Agents with vinegar in them or lemon can damage the surface of a countertop. It can also take away the point of sealing a countertop, making it less effective. The good thing is that stone-specific cleaning agents exist. Here are a few other cleaning and general tips:
- Never wait too long to clean up a spill.
- Never use rough cleaning tools on your countertop (seriously, a cloth is enough)
- Never underestimate the damage that heat can do (place a protective barrier under hot pots!)
