So you’ve got a beautifully remodeled kitchen with stunning new cabinets and amazing quartzite countertops. Everything is positively stunning and spotless and perfect in this moment. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just put it in a bubble and save it this way? You can’t, but you can do the next best thing: learn how to maintain your quartzite countertop so that you protect their beauty for years to come. It is neither terribly difficult nor expensive, though there will be some cost and investment of time. But trust us, it is worth it! Read on to learn how.
Seal Your Quartzite Countertops
All stone is at least slightly porous, so it is important to seal your countertops, and quartzite is no different. While quartzite is less porous than quartz and marble, they can still quickly stain, as the quartzite has a tendency to absorb liquids. If you make it a point to apply a layer of sealant once every year, you can prevent this. The sealant is usually polyurethane, natural wax, or acrylic, and applying it is not too difficult for all of the incredible protection it offers.
Clean Your Quartzite Countertops Regularly
Even if you seal your quartzite counters, you should still make a point of cleaning them regularly. Keeping countertops clean is the best way to make sure they have a long life. If something does spill, wipe it up as soon as you can. Generally, make a point to wipe the counters down with a mild detergent every day so that there is not build up of dirt and grime. If you let dirt build up, it could leave scratches when things move across your countertop. Avoid any abrasive or harsh cleaners on your countertops for the same reason.
Polish Your Countertops
Finally, for the best looking countertops, day after day, take time to polish them. This doesn’t refer to a quick swipe of polish after you’ve cleaned them (though you could do that also). This would be a real deep polish, done by a professional. Quartzite is strong, but it is not immune to damage, dents, and dings. Polishing is the best way to remove any dents and defects that sprout up over time and restore the luster of the material. And after the countertops are polished, it would be a great time to apply that yearly sealant coat for protection.
