Preparing for Thanksgiving is not without work. Yes, it allows you to have time off work to relax and spend time with friends or family. However, if you cook during the holidays, then you know that it takes time, effort, love, and expertise to execute the perfect meal. As you prepare meals and serve them to your guests, you should always be mindful of your kitchen countertop. Regardless of if you own a new granite countertop, have an older beloved countertop, or are thinking of having one installed, you can benefit from these tips on how to handle granite countertops during Thanksgiving.
Before Thanksgiving Begins:
If you have a new granite countertop, then you don’t have to worry about sealing it. If you haven’t sealed your granite countertop in a long time, then what you want to do is take about 20 minutes (we recommend this happen a week before Thanksgiving) and reseal your countertops. Sealing your countertop will help prevent stains and spills. You should do so once a year.
Cutting boards are your best friend. Never cut vegetables directly on your granite countertop. What will make life easier is taking the time to pull out all of the cooking equipment that you think you’re going to need beforehand. We also advise that you never place hot pots and pans directly on a kitchen countertop. Use trivets and hot pads to stop heat transfer.
During Thanksgiving:
Granite countertops are durable. However, with improper maintenance, the possibility of damage is sure to happen. To keep your granite countertop looking as if you just bought it and not damage the seal, wipe up spills as soon as possible. When you clean up a spill, harsh cleaners are not necessary. Typically, water and soap do the trick. Otherwise, there are nonabrasive cleaners on the market made for granite countertops. Coasters are excellent for protection against condensation that can stain a kitchen countertop.
After Thanksgiving:
After dinner is over, make sure to store hot food in a tight, air-sealed container. Once again, we don’t recommend setting hot pots and pans directly onto a granite countertop. Also, look out for wine stains. When red wine dries, it takes extra effort to remove the stain. Dark granite countertops are excellent to hide blemishes. Also, you only have to seal them every three years. If you don’t own a granite countertop, what’s holding you back?
